Description
Omniplex Science Museum, Oklahoma Air and Space Museum, and Kirkpatrick Center merged effective July 1, 1996 through an agreement that established the organization as one of the largest and most prestigious museums in the southwestern U.S. Kirkpatrick Science and Air Space Museum at Omniplex -- or Omniplex for short -- offers a diverse collection of interactive and historic exhibits and programs for visitors of all ages, backgrounds and interests. Previous to the merger, Omniplex Science Museum, Oklahoma Air and Space Museum, and Kirkpatrick Center operated independently -- with separate staffs, exhibits and programs -- inside the 10-acre Kirkpatrick Center museum complex. Kirkpatrick Center served as landlord, providing basic services such as parking, security, food service and a gift shop in exchange for annual fees from the member museums. The new organization -- Kirkpatrick Science and Air Space Museum -- includes the Hands-On Science Museum, Kirkpatrick Planetarium, the Air Space Museum, Kirkpatrick Galleries, and Kirkpatrick Gardens and Greenhouse and OmniDome Theater. Two other museums in the building -- the International Photography Hall of Fame & Museum and the Red Earth Indian Center -- are unaffected by the merger and continue to operate independently. The International Photography Hall of Fame & Museum promotes public education of the innovators, technologies and arts of photographic imaging. The Red Earth Museum is dedicated to encouraging the preservation of American Indian cultures through unique educational programs and exhibitions focusing on the Native American way of life.
